hurricane Maria is an example of being responsive right like we might have had a plan that week that month but um when
a when something like that happens a natural disaster and we had hundreds of
people that came from Puerto Rico and came into New
Bedford welcome back to mortgage daddies we got a special guest today our first
female independent on the podcast Michelle how’s it going what going how are you I’m doing well thank I’m honored
to be the first female individual guest thank you and not just our first female guest she’s the president of United wave
grer Bedford so really the first nonprofit that we’ve had on the show showing some support I’ve known Michelle
now for years sat on the board with United Way before we uh we open up
Milestone and I had to take a step back from a lot of different boards to uh concentrate on on business but
Michelle’s always been an advocate in the community um Cutting Edge always looking for different ideas so I wanted
to have you on and kind of pick your brain see where the United Way is going and what you guys have in the future
thanks Vern and thank you for your past support present support Milestone is always super supportive of our events
and our work so we’re neighbors friends yeah we see Michelle every single time I go to the
bathroom true right it’s kind of like we’re all one team sometimes it’s going to be nice if we ever just get our own
bathroom for an office like we had that we’re moving we’re moving in a couple weeks yeah we’re moving upstairs so
we’re going to have a different bathroom I won’t be running into you in the hallway anymore we’ll be on the fourth floor oh no you’ll see me okay maybe I
sneak up there when I have I have to have some I hear the bathrooms are better ours are a little public down
here this is true it’s actually one of the things my team’s pretty excited about because they know that it won’t be
so public anymore yeah it’s odd walking in there and seeing somebody shaving in the sink I’m like I’m going to wash my
hands same sink it get it gets a little wild here on the first floor it does gets wild especially with all the
construction going across have you seen like the contractors coming in yep why are they not using the porta-potties I
know what they’re doing I’m not trying to go in there we know why they’re not using the porta potties I wouldn’t want
to be there seconds into this podcast we’re already talking about porter potties and bathroom I don’t understand
go with this so tell us a little bit about the United Way of gr new badford and what your role is with them okay
well I could go on forever about the United Way of gring new edford um I’ve been in my role it was years at the
end of August so I’ve been there a long time uh but no year is ever the same because United Way is constantly
evolving and adapting to serve the community and be as responsive as possible to community needs uh United
Way of great New Bedford is part of United Way worldwide so there are over a thousand United ways in the United
States and over a hundred um in other parts of the world uh but every United Way is completely independent so even
though we are part of this National or International brand what we do really is
governed locally by our local independent board of directors made up of volunteers um ver is familiar with
that and uh what we do here in New Bedford could look very different from the United Way in Fall River or Boston
or Brockton uh because while the communities might have some similarities we also have some differences so United
Way is unique in that sense that we all are part of something larger and connected to that and held by certain
standards that we have to to abide by and every year we have to go through an accreditation process to be a United Way
so it’s pretty rigorous uh but what we do is really you know unique to our community so here at Uni way of great
New Bedford uh there are some Key Programs that we have that are unique to us as a United Way like our hunger
commission program uh I know you guys see the truck all the time it’s parked in the next parking lot the Y is
gracious enough to allow us to use it to um to park there uh you know that program was something that one of my
predecessors started started at this United Way but we’re the only United Way that has that program uh where United
ways are the same is that we raise money and we invest it back into the community and provide grants to other nonprofits
so that’s one of the unique things about United Way too is that we are a a provider of services and we uh lead
certain initiatives but we also act as a funer so similar to a foundation where
other nonprofits apply to for Grants they do that to United Way as well uh but but our United Way is focused on
greater New Bedford so we serve the city of New Bedford and the eight surrounding towns between Dartmouth and wam that’s
our service area that’s awesome so you mentioned the hunger commission I know
my office just did a going to the farm pick vegetables I think they spent some
of that time while you were away um they all came back and it they just really feel good about themselves right give it
back to the community it’s always been a main reason why I get involved uh as I
started getting older and busier in life and kids you know taking a step back from that you know I had to do that in
order to to do other things but I think you know for the people watching I I stress it in my office if you’re a local
business owner to reach out to Michelle to get your employees uh involved
because I think it’s it really changes the person who’s volunteering more than it’s actually helping the community
you’re you’re doing an amazing job with the hunger commission one of the main reasons I remember getting involved with the United ways um you know talk about a
little bit that you do with um you know people coming in helping them find shelter um you know I think it was the
hurricane that you guys stepped hurricane Maria a few years ago um you know that that those are the things I think when I think of the United Way
before you know I knew you as well as I did I do um and really started putting
myself into the United Way I would have had no idea that you guys touch so many different spectrums of people and uh the
communities that you guys serve so just like a couple of those things that are going on now that you guys are doing sure so um hurricane Maria is an example
of being responsive right like we might have had a plan that week that month but um when a when something like that
happens a natural disaster and we had hundreds of people that came from Puerto
Rico and came into New Bedford and we operate a family center so that is a partnership that we have through the
state with the Department of Children and Families the family centers were declared as official welcome centers by
the governor at that time to be points of entries for these families so you know that meant whatever plan we had
that week that day that month totally went out the window because this was what we were you know forced to do out
of necessity and out of need uh and so uh that family center team had to quickly pivot to have an influx of um
you know new people that they were serving to help those kids get enrolled in school to help those families get
shelter they didn’t have it get some basic needs you know sometimes people come here for lots of different reasons
and they sometimes just come with what the you know literally the clothes in their back or in a bag and so um that
was a great example of being responsive changing what we were planning to do to
be there to serve the community um and that’s just one example I mean there are so many things covid obviously um you
were involved during covid you know that was such a testament I think to
um the work we do in the community how we can mobilize people quickly and how we can get people not only involved to
give to volunteer to donate Goods resources but then get them to the people that need it and that’s really I
think United Way’s real purpose is to do that from both ends right like we can mobilize the resources get volunteers
get dollars raised and then we can put the dollars get the resources get the volunteers and put them to use to to
Really you know get people what they need at whatever given time so some of United Way’s work is kind of emergent
and to be responsive but then there are things that we are doing that are longterm too and I think some of the
grants that we uh fund at different nonprofits that’s really more on some of the longer-term solutions right like
we’re providing grants to our sister school and Nativity prep to provide um
Mental Health Services to students there because those schools are different than traditional Public Schools they don’t
have you know a traditional guidance counsel department and stuff so our support at those schools is to provide
some of those Services that’s really helping kids with their social emotional well-being which we know as parents like
kids are a lot right and some kids um you know are not as lucky to have the
the the great supportive family unit that some of us do and so schools are
their safe haven and schools are a place where kids don’t just get educated but get a lot of things so some of the
Partnerships and the support that we provide is to really you know work in partnership with in this case schools to
provide social emotional services to kids so you guys do just like whatever’s needed all over the place whatever like
I’ve always I’ve heard about the United Way since I was a kid but I never really understood what you guys did like from
the outside now I obviously have a better idea about it but I always kind of sat back and didn’t because most
nonprofits have like one Focus right children uh you know U the American
Heart so like you know what they’re doing exactly you guys are just whatever the community needs you find the issues
and you go and figure out a solution I think that’s a really good way to to Really um kind of pinpoint it but we do
have Focus areas right so United Way would not you know not because we don’t believe in it but we can’t do everything
and while we are a lot of things to a lot of people um we also have to you know be focused in in what we do and how
we do it so you know as an example we wouldn’t necessarily support um arts and culture initiatives or an environmental
initiative or something to do with cats and dogs Animal Welfare right so our main focus really kind of is in some
pillar areas of Education Health financial stability um most of the work
that we do really is around that kind of those pillars and and really helping people address basic needs right so the
food the shelter the clothing uh services like that the financial you touched on the financial piece is that
something that’s new that you guys have rolled so it’s not necessarily brand new but it became a much deeper focus in the
past year so I’d love to spend a little time talking about that so some of the work that other United ways have done in
other communities um have been in this space and for us our work within the
financial stability area was more so as a funer so you know another organization providing Services could absolutely
apply to that area of focus um but what we found as a funer when you know when
an applicant applies to us they have to select where they are fitting right was it health was it education was it
Financial stability the financial stability one was the one that we always got the least amount of applicants and
some of the services that we are funding in that area are as an example um the cedc in the North End of New Bedford
they provide um free tax prep for for people to help them get their um the tax
rebates and that’s something that we have funded there but you know they’re the ones providing the surface so while
while we’re providing funding to help that possible there they really are the ones seen as the ones providing that service and there’s a couple of other
things that we have funded in that space But but we knew that there really was a need to increase financial literacy
right like kids don’t learn how to balance a checkbook don’t learn how to budget there are a lot of adults that we
know right that can make a good living but they don’t always make the best financial decisions right so sometimes
it’s not so much about how much you make it’s how much you spend it’s how much you save um so financial literacy really
is not even just something that is to help people in need quote unquote which I think people think of United ways
sometimes as oh United Way helps people that are in need yes that is a big part of what we do but there are a lot of
things that we we either support or make possible that really are for anybody to take advantage of um so the financial
programs that we launched this year um there were two uh one was Financial Futures was which is specific to women
uh so uh we are in the middle of our third cohort so we’ve already graduated several women through this program it’s
a we commitment and every week is focused on something different it might be you know budgeting it might be
building your credit it might be long-term planning for savings um but
what’s really neat about this program is that we get volunteers to serve as coaches to these women so the women are
getting like a curriculum right like they’re basically attending a class but they also have this support of a person
that is making sure that they’re following up with them and kind of serves as their accountability partner
right like they’re helping them set goals and then they’re holding them to it like hey you said you were going to did you do that how’s that going um and
what’s been really neat about this program is that it really is women helping women and at the end of each
graduation that we’ve had like these women’s stories are awesome they’re like I increase my credit score from here to
here I actually have savings now that is getting me on the path to buy my first home um I finally paid off my debt or I
Consolidated my debt and the stories of what they’re learning some of it seems basic but again like we don’t people
learn this stuff you see it in what you do right like you want to help people buy a home but if they made some crappy
decisions they’re not positioned to do that right so you’re doing that in in your own work um so that has been a very
rewarding successful program and that program is always looking for volunteers right it’s a commitment but these women
are also part of this program because they have that coach so we’re always looking for volunteer coaches for that and then the other program that we
launched this year um back in January is a workplace-based program so we are we
have a coordinator that is a United Way employee that um the program is called Financial Wellness at work and this is
not something that I can’t take credit for like creating this program uh some United ways in Vermont actually started
this and one United Way has been doing it for like years and I always wanted to do it and again it was just right
place right time and really figuring out how that was going to work here in New Bedford but we launched it in January
and we have somebody that is working with these companies that have become our partner sit so we’re at imtra we’re
at Liv stream we are at davo manufacturing and we’re at gr new bord Health Center and pl signs um is about
to um become a new partner and they are providing training to employees on a
quarterly basis like workshops which you guys could even partner with us on some of that and then the person has office
hours at these companies so you know each company has their own like day that our person is there and an employee can
go to them confidentially and talk to them about maybe what they need and so
like the stories there are amazing like somebody comes to work my car was repossessed yesterday I had to get a ride to work today I’m not sure I’m
going to get here to work tomorrow we partnered with taunt and Federal Credit Union to do quick
loans and they’re providing these emergency loans and then the person’s paying it back through their payroll
deduction they’re building their credit that way they’re getting their crisis managed they’re coming to work right so
the employers sees it as a way to be an employer of choice have loyal employees
that they are you know helping and um it’s a great partnership so that’s a really unique program that it’s not
something that is widely known that we’re doing this I didn’t know about one of these programs yep so across the
these are the two newest ones so I’m not surprised yeah there’s a lot of stuff that United Way does that is you know
sometimes behind um the scenes or we’re also sometimes working on tough issues
like they’re not pretty things to talk about right like we do a lot with the Department of Children and Families like
kids are abused kids are neglected like the family center is an intervention to really give parents tools they need to
hopefully prevent that and to reduce the rates of child abuse and neglect those are not things that we can you know post
on social media talk about pose for pictures but like this is the work that we do it’s hard stuff um but we think
that we are providing kind of a safety net of services for for people in the community how many people did you get to
sign sign up for that uh Financial class so um it’s a we course and you know
don’t quote me on this I believe the capacity of the class is so each time
like we can’t have more than and then we need coaches right so what we find
is finding the coaches is the tough part right so like this particular cohort that launched a couple weeks ago I think
we had five women on a waiting list that we couldn’t get get in because we didn’t have enough coach are you looking for just women coaches so this particular
program is justen and it’s a model that we um more comfortable it is more
comfortable Women to Women uh I will tell you that the first cohort we had a gentleman kind of sneak in there and we
were like well what are we can do we’re not going to turn him away and as long as he was okay having a female coach and he ended up being really great at the
program and I think his perspective actually was great but the program itself is in fact designed more for for
women but the the workplace based one is really for anybody and what we’re finding there is that it’s not always
just the people you know on the factory line that are maybe the lower wage people it’s sometimes people in other
parts of a company that maybe just got into a bind or in a situation and they don’t know how to fix it right and
sometimes it’s not Financial right like United Way um is a resource to other
resources in the community so like somebody could come to us and say hey like my brother this like he’s having a
substance abuse issue and he’s living on my couch right now like I need to get him in a program we can help with that right because we probably either support
a program like that in the community or we know where we can connect to um so
we’re we’re helping connect those dots and providing like those resources and referrals for other things that
sometimes are not just Financial we definitely have some females in the office that could probably volunteer to
help you I love that we’d love to have some Milestone gals do that get that going it amazes me when I talk to just
people on mortgage daddies or just out in public and I’m talking to them and I it just always runs through my brain
like what possessed you to get into this line of work oh yeah and then to stay
there for years right so I mean the United Way does all of these things you
head this up I think I’d be stressed out all the time and you always keep evolving I mean
even from seeing like the events that you throw and the programs that you guys offer I didn’t know anything about these two financial literacy so it’s ever
changing but what makes you stay in that field and keep doing that I mean
so I think it actually is because we are constantly evolving right like I think if we literally did the same if I did the same thing every day with the same
people for the same reasons every day for years maybe I would have run out of steam or got a little burent out but
I can’t believe it’s been years because every year has been different um when I think of when I so in while I’ve
been in my role for years I’ve actually given over years of service to unit way so when I first came to
United Way I came as a volunteer um and about five months later ended up coming onto the staff as the marketing person
and then um you know it kind of quickly evolved the the fundraising person was leaving and really thought I’d be good
at that and I remember thinking like I don’t want to ask people for money like you know I went to school for journalism
and um in the end really thought I wanted to be in public relations at like some big company and I I thought I was
going to be a public relations person at like a Cosmetic Company or fashion company because those are the things
that I enjoy in my you know personal life and when I started at unite away I thought the marketing piece was a way to
kind of get my foot in the door and it was only the second place I had worked at I had worked at a PR firm in
Burlington um for two years prior um so when the the fundraising piece came to me I thought like okay this is now off
my path a little bit right like I saw the marketing piece just as a stepping stone and the person just encouraged me
and really said like you’d be good at this you have the personality and like it’s not as hard as you think and so
next thing you know I’m the development person for United Way right ask yeah listen they do this to the board
members too when I started I was like here and then next right move up the ranks but at United Way fundraising is
very unique right so in addition to writing grants or sitting across from a business owner and asking for support or money we’re also in companies running
workplace campaigns right so um we’re in front of factory workers in the business
park at all shifts asking them for two bucks a week out of their paycheck like United Way’s funding model is kind of
unique in that sense um so the bread of that was like one day
you could be talking to you know a philanthropist asking for $and the next day I could be standing in front of a a factory group talking to
them and ask them for two bucks a week but it was so eye openening to see like
that’s the beauty of United Way like anybody can give it doesn’t matter what you give it’s that Collective power of people coming together and giving what
they can so that first in I was here for years then I left I was recruited to
go to um the charter school the global Charter school and I was their first director of uh development and
communication and then my my previous boss that United away um two years after that was leaving and I remember thinking
like I would love to do that but I truly did not think I could number one I was years old I was a woman and the the
people prior to me had all been male you know we had never had a female lead and
I was young you know and I thought well all I can do is try but but I really
didn’t think I’d get the job I kind of did it just for like experience and then you know six months later you go through
this process and they’re handing me the keys and offering me this job and I remember thinking what the heck are they
thinking like I don’t know what I’m doing you know and then you just learn as you go um so to think that years
ago like that’s how I felt right here are the keys and good luck that was the the board member at the time was the
former Chief of Police in New Bedford big guy he was like big guy deep voice and I remember thinking like I
don’t know if I can do this right what did I get myself into so here I am years later still doing it but it’s
because the work continuously evolves it’s because um I surround myself with great people you know I’m very fortunate
to have an amazing team and that is the tough part and I’m sure you guys know this too like you can love what you do
you can do what you do have goals personally professionally management is the toughest part right like facts
totally that’s the part like sometimes for me it’s if I could just do this
I’d be great the stress sometimes comes from management right but I have great
people and we are all here to do this work and believe in the work that we’re doing and so yeah here I am that’s
awesome so you’re the first women pres first woman president at United greater New Bedford and when I started I was one
of um there was this other gentleman in the midwest who ran a tiny United Way We Were the youngest at the time but most
people are you know usually a little bit more senior than to get the job
that’s awesome you guys do a lot with women in community we talk you were just talking about the F the financial
literacy piece and that that group you guys also rolled out power of the purse
oh yeah how many years has that been going on so this past year was it our sixth year of power of the purse it’s
been around that long huh yes now again power of the purse would love to take credit for it I can take credit for bringing it to New Bedford but not my
idea right there are some uni ways that have run power of the pers events for years I know that ours is the best
though yeah that’s awesome it’s got to be truly like sometimes um Power of the purse events and other communities are
usually just a breakfast or a luncheon you guys have a whole with a speaker and then the auction of purses we wanted
ours to be fun unique and more of a gals Night Out feel and you guys know like
you know your your your co-workers come your significant others come it’s it’s a big event it’s very unique to have um
you know three plus women in a room together Who come out and uh enjoy each
other’s company in the spirit of giving back it it really has become an event
that is memorable for so many yeah I mean we’ve had Rachel on our team attend the event the last couple years she
comes back every single time it’s just a good networking with a lot of other women in the community where you’re
getting them all together right there’s I think what you do at the United Way with kind of these women programs and
putting on these events for women is super important right we’ve talked about this at leadership at our company is
making sure we have the women in place to do the job right they they definitely
can and quite honestly I think they’re better managers like you know we we have some some women on the team like they
have more patience patience yeah they’re way more patience they’ll rub your back I walk into Craig’s office first thing I
have to do to to to even have him look at me in the morning I’m like poppy daddy Daddy can I come into your office
do you have some time I’m just kidding I told you I was gonna get out daddy Wai I was like when are we gonna get to the
joking no but seriously like some of the work that you’re doing you know not just for the women is amazing but the kids um
the the different programs that you guys you guys do in the service and seeing the food truck and you know it it it’s
touching I don’t know if everybody in my office sees this but I I I get out of the my car in the morning I’m coming
into work and you see a line down in the you know YMCA Park it makes you think all of these people
are there to get fresh produce that your group and volunteers go into grow this
stuff take care of it Garden it Harvest it y to get it there and you know we’re
the fortunate ones like I sit back and I’m always like you know what give back to the community give back give back because there’s somebody in that line
that could be sitting in my seat someday that’s going to be able to give back and I think that’s those are the touching
things as I I I just wish you know for me I know the United Way United Way does
a great job but just like what Craig was saying it just resonating in my head to get that message out right because you
guys have so many different things that you guys do for the community but I feel like there’s only a certain percentage
that actually understand the magnitude that you guys have and the impact that you guys have on the south coast in the
surrounding towns I mean you guys service would you say eight other towns on top of the city of New batford do you
know how many people are in those towns I mean you must be looking at I mean Collective collectively it’s a it’s a
big population area I would say that you know just because the nature of this New Bedford being the city like most of the
programs and probably most of the beneficiaries of a lot of our work probably is more concentrated in New Bedford but I think that there are also
kind of misconceptions that you know there aren’t people in need in Fair Haven or Dartmouth and that’s not true
like we know that right um so there is great need on the south coast there is great need in the greater New Bedford
area um we want people to know that United Way is a resource for them if they need support or that they need Services if
it’s not something we do chances are we partner with what’s the best way for somebody to reach out if they are in
need so certainly to just call um you know what the the person who answers the phone at unit away when somebody calls
and is expressing you know an issue of concern the first thing we always ask is do you have children because if they
have children then they are automatically bumped to the family center right that’s the family Center’s work is to work with families and not
just focus on Mom and Dad or or the single parent household or the kids but it’s to really look at the family as a
whole but sometimes it’s just a person it could be a retired person it could be a single person right so depending on
what the issue is um we can usually if not deal with it ourselves send them to
the place that can um but certainly calling us is just the best way the other thing is we uh help fund with
other United ways in Massachusetts something called so just like or you call and Works /they
have um over languages that they can they can get um through a a program that
they use so it doesn’t matter what language you speak chances are they can help you but is a nonemergency phone
number that anybody looking for non-emergency crisis help can call right
and it might be you know I need to my my parent is elderly and I need to find uh
you know a community center or a nursing home for them or it could be I just moved to the area and I need to know
where to get XY or Z child and how to get a hold of the resources that are in
this area and just like the financial side nobody gets taught this it’s hard to know all this stuff so it’s hard to
know all this stuff and sometimes that stuff comes like hey your your father’s fine and then all of a sudden one day
he’s not and now you got to try to figure it out and you’re working you have kids how do you figure it out and you guys can help with all that’s I did
I did not know why I say like United Way is a resource for everybody right it’s not just um helping people in need
that’s a huge part of what we do and I think at the core it’s kind of you know who we are and the tradition of how
United ways were started but United ways have evolved in that regard right like we really can just help connect people
um you know the other function we have is helping companies get their their people involved right that’s a great
idea and sometimes it’s to benefit United Way but a lot of times it’s not right like United Way serves as an intermediary to we can work with you to
get your employees doing something at another nonprofit right but that nonprofit is looking to us to find those
employees because they might be smaller and not have the capacity to work on the with the corporate sector you I way kind
of serves sometimes as that middleman between the nonprofits and the corporate sector so we have some viewers now
watching this maybe there’s like two viewers maybe we’re up to a million wow I think we’re up to a
million already after this after this after Mich you do have Miss America Miss Massachusetts
America I did miss Hawaii won my year yeah but she was great and she’s still a friend that’s awesome yeah but
in all seriousness if somebody wanted to just donate do you have any events coming up how does how does one go about
donating so first of all people can donate to United Way online right seven days a week so um H that link all
you get the link up on there uh and you know know that United Way is a trusted partner like we have all the highest
standards of um being trusted nonprofit um there are several kind of you know
Watchdog organizations that police nonprofits candidly and you know we have the highest rating at charity Navigator
we have the highest rating on candid and guidar um so we are are proud of that
and people can give online safely securely um but you know sometimes people don’t like to give online they
like to just mail a check or they like to walk in and talk to us and learn um you know more about where their support
can go but anybody that wants to volunteer we also have volunteers southcoast.org so that’s a free tool for
the community that we provide any nonprofit that has volunteer opportunities can use it for free to
post their volunteer opportunities and then anybody looking for a volunteer opportunity can use it to search so I
call it the match.com for volunteers and nonprofits that’s awesome um so that’s a way that people can seek uh volunteer
opportunities right like you might have a kid that has a service requirement um for school or church um it’s a great way
to to be able to to look and also kind of find what you want to do align to your interests awesome so lots of ways
to get involved what’s the bright text oh breite by text breite by text yeah so breite by text is what we call um a a
free caregiver tool so it’s specifically targeted for um parents and caregivers
caregivers prenatal to age eight um so you can sign up for basically it’s a
free text messaging service and you text that’s the number and you text the
word great and then it will generate a little form very quick where it’s going to ask um your zip code and your child
or children’s age and then you’re going to get automatic texts about um things
that you can do with your kid that are appropriate for their age things that you know they like Milestones they should be hitting um and then we partner
with like the library and other um Community organizations that offer free events so if you live in Dartmouth and
the Dartmouth Public Library has like a free toddler Story Hour or something you’re going to get the text
specifically about that that’s awesome yeah so that’s another thing we do that’s new since you’ve been so we’ll
make sure we have all these links for everybody to be able to donate and you know the I think that needs to get
blasted out there for everybody now is that just for Massachusetts the so is in a lot of States um but here in
Massachusetts it’s operated out of Framingham and it’s the United ways in Massachusetts um that um make the
funding possible to operate perfect mhm and it’s a lot of info a lot
it’s a lot it’s a lot how much you guys do Mich shelle just for fun take a janga piece just can have I’m not good at this
